Are One Body

A two room installation— Mass and Prayer— part of (it’s about time) exhibition at the Art, Design, and Architecture Museum.

Mass gallery

Inspired by sanctuary halls, Mass draws parallels between the two definitions of mass– a large group of people and a Catholic church service. In considering the function of churches as communal spaces, the banners and text objects have been queered by using language from Christian services and trans / non-binary / gender non-conforming language and movements. This space looks for overlap and illegibility between social movements and religious rituals, between gender performance and faith performance.

Prayer gallery

In the solitude of the studio, images and memories exist between self and the canvas, requiring a “public act” or testimony of their being true. The emptiness and shadows in the work reflect the longing to be in spaces that once offered a sense of belonging and security.
